“You’re finishing the job faster, so your total watts consumed is significantly lower,” says  JB Baker, Vice President of Products at ScaleFlux. “We’ve had these drives shipping since 2022. The next generation will be announcing here. We’ll be shipping it later this year. We have dozens of customers who have deployed this already for various applications, database applications, software defined storage, high frequency trading. cloud-based applications, managed service providers and cloud service providers globally utilizing our drives to improve their efficiency.”

In this podcast, JB walks us through how AI is driving up power demand, and how AI can impact the data center at many levels. We then review new approaches to the challenge that are already proving their ability to do more with less power. As JB puts it, “…having enough capacity and enough bandwidth in the DRAM to feed that processing beast.”

AI models, such as ChatGPT, require substantial computational power, with energy consumption doubling every six months. For instance, ChatGPT alone uses over 500,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity daily, vastly exceeding the average U.S. household’s consumption. This rapid growth in energy demand poses a serious threat to global sustainability efforts, with projections indicating that AI development could consume 13% of global power and contribute to 6% of global carbon emissions by 2030.
